Building Positive Relationships Between Kids and Cops
The Shop with a Cop program is more than just a shopping trip. It’s a chance to help local children reshape how they see law enforcement through compassion, connection, and shared experience.
Cops 4 Kids: Shop with a Cop is the partnership between the Menomonie Police Department, Dunn County Sheriff’s Office, UW-Stout Police Department, Boyceville Police Department, Colfax Police Department, and community stakeholders.
Shop with a Cop programs take place in August and December.
- This program is specifically designed for children who:
- Have experienced trauma involving law enforcement
- Have had negative or fearful perceptions of police
- Have witnessed arrests, domestic disturbances, or substance abuse
- May be struggling emotionally due to difficult home or community experiences
This is NOT a financial-need-based program. While many nominated children may also have economic challenges, we ask that nominations focus on those who would benefit emotionally and socially from this kind of interaction.
Why It Matters
Many children in Dunn County have only encountered law enforcement in moments of crisis. Shop with a Cop gives them a chance to:
- Meet officers in a calm, supportive environment
- Experience kindness and connection
- See police as approachable, trustworthy helpers
- Feel seen, safe, and supported
- Each child is paired with officer(s) for a $200 shopping trip at Walmart. Most kids shop for essentials—clothes, shoes, toiletries—and often gifts for others.
Since 2016, 260 children have had the chance to form meaningful, positive memories through this program.
Nominations must be made through school staff, social workers, or law enforcement liaisons.
